What Is Root Raking?
Root raking is a more complete form of land clearing for property owners who want clean, bare ground—not a layer of surface mulch. A root rake pulls vegetation and its root systems from the soil so the area can be prepared for a homesite, yard, building area, or other usable space.
Standard root-raking work normally includes removing bushes, palmettos, undergrowth, small trees up to approximately six inches in diameter, and their associated roots and stumps. Medium and large trees are evaluated separately because the required work varies from one property to another.
After the vegetation and roots are removed, the ground can be graded and smoothed when appropriate for the project. The result is a cleared area that is ready for the customer’s next step.
When Root Raking Is the Right Choice
Root raking is appropriate when clearing the surface is not enough and the roots, stumps, and buried woody material also need to come out. It is commonly used when a property owner wants to turn an overgrown area into clean, usable ground.
Root raking may be the right choice when you are:
Preparing an area for a future homesite or building
Creating or expanding a yard
Removing palmettos, brush, and their root systems
Clearing small trees and stumps from an area
Cleaning up buried woody debris or unwanted material
Preparing ground for grading and future improvements

How the Root-Raking Process Works
1. Walk the Property
I meet with you to identify the area to be cleared, what should remain, equipment access, and where the removed material should be placed.
2. Remove the Vegetation and Roots
Using my John Deere 333P and root rake, I pull out the brush, palmettos, small trees, stumps, and associated root systems included in the project.
3. Place the Debris
Debris can be piled wherever you choose. If a grapple-truck service will remove it, the pile is normally placed near the road. Material that will remain onsite is often placed toward the rear or along a property line.
4. Grade and Smooth the Area
When appropriate, I grade and smooth the disturbed ground and complete a final walk-through with you.

What is the difference between root raking and forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching grinds vegetation and leaves the processed material on the ground. Root raking pulls out vegetation, stumps, and root systems to produce clean, bare ground. Mulching is generally the more economical choice for opening wooded property, while root raking is better when the land needs to become a usable homesite, yard, or building area.
Does root raking remove stumps?
Yes. Standard root-raking work normally includes the stumps and roots associated with bushes, palmettos, undergrowth, and small trees up to approximately six inches in diameter. Medium and large trees are evaluated and priced separately.
Will every small root or buried object be removed?
Root raking removes the substantial roots, stumps, rocks, and buried material encountered during the work. It cannot guarantee the removal of every small root or an unseen object located beneath the working depth.
What happens to the debris?
I will pile the debris wherever you choose at no additional charge. Material being collected by a grapple truck is normally placed near the road. Material remaining onsite is often placed toward the rear of the property or along a property line.
Does Dusty Roads haul debris away?
No. Hauling is performed by a separate grapple-truck or similar service. I can prepare and position the pile so it is accessible for collection.
Can the debris be burned?
Burning may be an option when conditions and local requirements allow it and no burn ban is in effect. Piling the material for burning is included. Obtaining the required burn permit and tending the fire are available for an additional charge.
Will the ground be ready for the next phase?
Yes. Root-raked areas are normally graded and smoothed as part of the work, leaving the property ready for the customer’s next phase. A building project may still require any surveying, pad preparation, or specialized grading called for by its construction plans.
What about underground utilities?
Most root-raking work does not involve deep excavation. I evaluate the work area and arrange an 811 utility locate when the project scope or location requires one.
